How to Use WordPress Tags – WordPress Guides. One of the most common problems for those who use WordPress is knowing how to use the Tags , in this article we give a series of useful tips on the subject and on the most common errors in the use of tags: what they are, why and when to use them, how use them to the fullest, happy reading.
Within WordPress it is possible to select both the category and the tags for each article we write.
Trivially, to make a simple distinction, it can be said that the categories are the “Macro areas” of a website while the tags are the “labels” or additional information present within a website that allow you to group articles (posts) belonging to different categories.
Learning how to use tags is not easy, or rather, if you do not know where to start or do not have a guide, probably, after some time, you will find yourself going crazy with tags because, by accessing the tag section of your site, there will be hundreds and hundreds of tags, many of them with very few articles (or with only one article).
Personally, I always recommend choosing a single category for each article and then inserting one or more
tags to “specify” or “group” multiple articles that are part of the same topic, remember that it is very important to pay attention to the number of tags we use.
The tags I created are useful not only because they allow me to group multiple articles also belonging to different categories, but to improve the usability of the site and user navigation , offering them the possibility to access “only articles that talk about programmatic buying, real time bidding, or to the marketing and communication section “without having to search among all the articles on the site.
What are WordPress Tags?
First we try to understand what are the tag or tags WordPress going to see what is the definition and meaning that gives Wikipedia :
A tag is a keyword or a term associated with a “Piece” of information (an image, a geographical map, a post, a video clip, …), which describes the object, making it possible to classify and search for information based on keywords.
The tags are generally chosen based on informal and personal criteria by the authors / creators of the indexing object. However, tags can also be used improperly, that is to say they provide information about someone’s opinion of a work and therefore be related to the consumer of the content and not to the content itself.
From here it is clear that simply associating tags is not enough to give a semantic level to the network.
Basically, the tags should serve to classify a group of articles based on certain criteria that we have established previously or in the development / growth phase of our website.
How to use WordPress tags?
To use WordPress tags, put yourself in the shoes of a user who arrives on your website. While browsing, it is hoped that the user does not visit a single article but can browse, find other interesting articles and consequently increase the number of pages viewed within your website.
Generally, to make a user view more pages, only a function is used, at the end of the article, which shows what are the “related posts” or related articles, a function that can be activated through a plugin or that is present on some templates by default and which works automatically.
However, users have other ways to view other pages of a website: the most important are certainly the navigation menu, where the categories of your website should be present, and the tags that can be found at the end of the article or in sidebar (the sidebar) in case you insert a tag cloud ( by the way, you know that tag clouds have not been used for at least two years, right?) , or again at the top immediately below the title of the article.
Because you don’t have to use hundreds of different tags.
From experience I can assure you that if you use a lot of tags, perhaps too specific, users could then click and find only one article with that tag (which maybe is the article they were reading), and consequently we convinced them to click unnecessarily !
Hundreds of tags also weigh down all WordPress which will be forced to index each tag and make more queries (questions) to the database, slowing down the whole website a bit. And then, we want to talk about Google that will index (unless you communicate not to index the tags) the same article several times, precisely because of the tags?
Good use of tags.
To use the tags well, try to understand which are the macro areas that you can specify through tags and thanks to which you can offer real virtual “itineraries” to your users. If you have a site that talks about mobile phones and smartphones, for example, the tags could be “Telephone operators” rather than “Wind, Tim, H3G, Vodafone”.
Avoid creating singular and plural tags or in various declinations such as: “Offer”, “Offers”, “June offer”, “May offer”, “Last minute offers”, and try to enclose everything in a single tag.
Do not enter the same category and tag names: it can happen, by mistake, to create a category and then associate a tag that has the same name as the category, this is also absolutely negative in terms of indexing and “clarity” of the website , therefore, to give an example, do not enter a category “WordPress” to assign the tag “WordPress” because it would not make sense!
